PHOTOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS

 

I. Portfolio Upload - photographs of 3 to 6 pieces of original artwork that includes the following: 

1. A self-portrait, done from observation (from observation means you draw yourself by looking in a mirror). 

2. A still life, done from observation (from observation means you draw objects placed before you on a table). 

3. You may choose the remaining 1 to 4 pieces you wish to include. Please include up to 4 of your strongest images taken this year. Pieces can be created using any material in any form, and may be two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Please use files of the following formats: JPEG, HEIC, PNG or TIFF

 

II. Student Introduction 

Upload a short video or written explanation about the uploaded pieces of original artwork. Discuss choice of subject & materials, motivation, & influences.Why would you choose photography  as a possible major at Art & Design? Your video should be no longer than 2 minutes. Written explanations should be no more than 500 words. 

 

You can upload your video to youtube and make it private.

III. Virtual Performance Task: Photographing Highlights and Shadows and Drawing one example

 

In addition to your portfolio works, please submit photographs of one figure drawing with in-progress photos. Set up a family member next to a window and observe where the highlights and shadows are falling on their face. 

 

A highlight is a bright spot, where light is shining

A shadow is where the light is not shining 

 

Photograph a portrait of your family member by framing their face long ways, vertical, in your camera frame. 

 

Using pencil and paper, choose one photograph and draw the human face and indicate a shadow by using your pencil to make a shadow. Try to use value or lines to draw the shadows. Include any observed details & draw the facial features. Include background elements to place the figure in a space to prevent them from floating in the air. 

 

The drawing should be completed within 30-45 minutes. We are looking to see how you develop your drawing. Please take photographs of your work throughout your drawing and submit 4 photographs for the drawing at the follow times: 

 

 1. A photograph in 5 minutes. 

 2. A photograph at 10 minutes. 

 3. A photograph at 20 minutes. 

 4. A photograph of the completed drawing at 30-45 minutes. 

 

IV. Photographing a Still Life of a Sandwich

Photograph a still life of a sandwich using three different angles and one light source. In this task, we ask you to setup, light, compose and photograph a sandwich in a unique way. 

A Still Life in photography is a scene made of objects that are carefully composed and placed. 

A light source you use can be natural light by a window or artificial light from a lamp. Observe the highlights and shadows falling on the sandwich based on which direction the light is facing. 

Using a smartphone or camera, align your frame with the sandwich in a unique way. Think about perspective and push yourself to compose an image from three different perspectives. 

 

The story comes from your composition and lighting of the sandwich. Be as creative as possible while pushing the story forward.
